M26 Pershing, 1/35th scale from Tamiya

This is my first tank build. I painted this in oils and acrylics and used weathering powder mixed with alcohol for the mud. The base I threw together with a mix of Celluclay, white glue, and the bricks and rubble I made from dental stones and plasters from work.

Fearless Frost Dragon from Ral Partha

I painted this dragon for a commission and I’m pleased at how it came out. It’s mainly a black dragon, highlighted up to a shade of blue on the body and wings and a greenish grey on the scales.  I tried for glowing eyes as was in the reference I received.

Luke Skywalker and Yoda

These are the last WIP pictures and the final work of Luke Skywalker and Yoda, a 70mm white metal kit from Knight Models.  This is the first time I’ve built a base that consisted more than some sand and maybe a little grass.  I built up the base with natural sticks and sections of vine, …

Darth Vader

Here are the last few pictures of  Darth Vader, a 70mm white metal kit from Knight Models.   He was more of  a challenge than I expected and I know that I need practice painting black. These are only slightly different from the last WIP pictures.  I ended up stripping the light saber three times and …

USS Arizona Finished

This are the final pictures of my first scale model project, a 1:700th scale USS Arizona from MiniHobbyModels.  This model has taught me many things and I now know the pitfalls of assembly.  My next model will go much more smoothly.  I’ve looked at a lot of references on building scale ships and most paint …

Freebooter’s Bad Fairy

This is “Bad Fairy” from Freebooter.   I painted this miniature for a gift.  I didn’t have time to sculpt a base so I thought a nice Aqua Aura crystal cluster would fit well.   It’s a bit more fragile that I thought it would be but that gave me the opportunity to  move some of …

Work in Progress Dragon : Basing, Groundwork, and Finishing

When satisfied with the painting, I use two part epoxy and pins to fasten the model to a base.  I picked up this base at a craft store then stained and sealed it.  Bases can also be found online and in hobby shops in all shapes, sizes, and materials. After the epoxy cures, groundwork can …

Work in Progress Dragon: Painting

Once the base coat is dried, I liberally applied thinned dark blue ink over the entire model.   I don’t always use inks and washes but it works well with tiny scales to easily shadow around every one of them. The ink will take a while to dry. Once it’s ready, I go over every …

Work in Progress Dragon: Primed

The project then gets a thin coat of primer and airbrushed. The color of primer and airbrushed base coat depends on the final color of the model.  If a brighter color scheme is needed, then it’s best to go with a light colored primer. I use grey and sometimes white.  If a dark coloring is …

Work in Progress Dragon: Assembling

I then assemble everything that can be put together without blocking the  path of my brush.  This dragon is easy enough to paint fully assembled.  I used pins, two part epoxy and epoxy putty for strength and joint filling.  The cord is used to keep the weight off of the wings until they are fully …
